“So who’s going first?” I knew Jessen wouldn’t want to, so I looked at Bot.

Bot took a step back and made a sweeping gesture toward the booth. “After you.”

I slapped the flashlight into his hand and jumped into the booth. Maybe I should’ve tried to talk Jessen into going first, in case she wanted to back out, but I feared trouble might greet me above. Better me than a pregnant woman.

Bot slid the door shut as I buckled up. The backpack prevented me from leaning against the seatback and feeling secure, but I scooted as far back as possible.

Jessen gazed at me through wide eyes. Bot’s mouth hung open. He nodded.

I shoved the lever into position and reached for the bars on the sides of the seat. My fingers brushed the cold metal bars. The seat lifted. I wrapped my fingers around the bars. Feet tingling, stomach sliding, I shot up through the darkness.

A few long seconds later, the ride slowed and jerked to a stop. Silence and darkness surrounded me. I peeled my fingers from the cold bars and felt around for the buckle. Where was the door?

I flung the buckle off and reached out into the blackness. The compartment had cold metal walls, all of them within my reach. Not knowing what lay beneath the footrest of the seat, I dared not stand.

Dedrick had said to be patient and that he would open the door.

My heart raced. I took a few deep breaths. I wanted to call out Dedrick’s name. What had kept him from signaling us in the first place? What kept him now?

He hadn’t seemed overly concerned when he had gotten into the transporter. He even had a look of humor in his brown eyes. Relax. Any minute now—

Something scraped the metal wall in front of me. A bang. Then another, much louder. Finally, I heard a voice.

“Dedrick?” I dared speak.

“The door’s damaged. I can’t . . .” Muffled words replaced understandable speech. “Try to kick it.”

“Kick it?”

“Yeah, kick it. Hurry!”

I grabbed onto the sidebars and drew my legs up. With all the strength I could muster, I thrust my feet against the metal wall in front of me.

Dim light streamed in through a long crack on one edge of the door.

“Again,” Dedrick said.

I slammed my feet against the metal again.

The door came loose, unhinged. Dedrick lifted and flung it to the side. The dark gray of night showed behind his shadowy figure. A wide garage door loomed few meters behind him. Muted orange light showed in the distance to my left. Where were we?

He reached out to me. “Quick. We have to get the others.”

I latched onto his hand and he yanked me to my feet. As I jumped from the compartment, he reached back inside and groped an inner wall. “Chair’s not lowering.” He banged his fist against something on the inside of the wall then rubbed his chin.

“Maybe it only operates when the door is closed,” I said.

He glanced at the mangled door that lay on the ground near us.
